Rising pollution crisis
Gurgaon Emerges as India Most Polluted City in March 2026: A recent report by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) has identified Gurgaon as the most polluted city in India for March 2026. The city recorded an alarming PM2.5 level of 116 µg/m³, far exceeding safe limits.
Such high levels of fine particulate matter pose serious health risks, especially for children and elderly people. It reflects the growing urban pollution crisis in rapidly developing regions.
Static GK fact: PM2.5 particles are smaller than 2.5 micrometres, allowing them to penetrate deep into human lungs.
Haryana pollution hotspot
Haryana dominated the list with four cities in the top 10 most polluted cities. These include Gurgaon, Faridabad, Bahadurgarh, and Manesar, indicating a regional pollution cluster.
Other cities on the list include Ghaziabad, Noida, Bhiwadi, Singrauli, Mandideep, and Nandesari. These cities span across states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.
Static GK Tip: Bhiwadi in Rajasthan has frequently ranked among India’s most polluted industrial towns.
Long-term pollution trends
While Gurgaon topped for March, Ghaziabad emerged as the most polluted city for the entire financial year 2025–26. This highlights that pollution is not just seasonal but persistent.
Many cities continue to fail in meeting the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). Haryana recorded 9 out of 24 cities exceeding safe limits, followed by Uttar Pradesh.
Performance of NCAP
The National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), launched to reduce pollution levels, has delivered mixed results over the past seven years. Only a limited number of cities have met reduction targets.
Some cities, especially in Uttar Pradesh, showed improvement with PM10 reduction exceeding 40%. States like Maharashtra, West Bengal, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand also reported partial success.
Static GK fact: NCAP was launched in 2019 with a target to reduce particulate pollution by 20–30% initially, later revised to higher targets.
Areas of concern
Several states have reported worsening pollution trends. Odisha recorded the highest number of cities with increased PM10 levels, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.
Other states like Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu also showed rising pollution in certain cities. This indicates uneven implementation of pollution control measures.
Best and worst performers
Dehradun showed the most significant improvement, reducing PM10 levels by 75% compared to 2017–18. This highlights the potential of effective policy implementation.
On the other hand, Visakhapatnam recorded a 73% increase in pollution levels. Delhi showed moderate progress with a 17% reduction in PM10 levels.
Need for stronger action
Experts emphasize the need for science-based and region-specific interventions to tackle pollution effectively. Identifying major pollution sources in each region is crucial.
They recommend expanding NCAP coverage, strengthening enforcement mechanisms, and adopting a regional approach for better outcomes. Without stronger measures, pollution levels may continue to rise.
