Digital governance push in Gujarat
Gujarat Sugam Initiative Strengthens Digital Governance: The Gujarat government has digitised nearly 20 high-demand public services to improve administrative efficiency. This reform follows recommendations of the Gujarat Administrative Reforms Committee (GARC).
The move aims to ensure seamless citizen-government interaction with reduced delays. It marks a transition towards end-to-end digital governance in the state.
Static GK fact: Gujarat’s capital is Gandhinagar, while Ahmedabad is its largest city.
Sugam Digital Gujarat Initiative
The services are launched under the Sugam Digital Gujarat Initiative, led by the Department of Science and Technology. The initiative focuses on faceless, paperless, and cashless service delivery.
It aligns with the broader vision of Digital India, promoting transparency and efficiency. Citizens can now access services without visiting government offices physically.
Static GK Tip: Digital India Programme was launched in 2015 to transform India into a digitally empowered society.
Coverage of key public services
In the first phase, services across five major departments are digitised. These include Social Justice, Revenue, Legal, Food and Civil Supplies, and Tribal Development departments.
Key services include issuance of caste, income, non-creamy layer, and EWS certificates. Ration card-related services like addition, deletion, and correction of details are also available online.
Additionally, ready affidavits and revenue records are integrated into the system, reducing paperwork significantly.
Technology integration and features
The Digital Gujarat platform integrates advanced digital tools for efficient service delivery. It uses Aadhaar-based authentication to verify identity securely.
Features include API-driven verification, DigiLocker linkage, eSign facility, and UPI-based payments. Certificates are issued with QR codes, ensuring easy verification and authenticity.
Some services are also accessible through WhatsApp, making them more user-friendly. The system allows reuse of previously submitted data, reducing duplication.
Static GK fact: UPI (Unified Payments Interface) enables instant real-time payments developed by NPCI.
Impact on service delivery
The platform handles nearly 1.20 crore applications annually, with about 87 lakh applications linked to these digitised services. This significantly reduces processing time and improves accuracy.
Citizens can now track applications in real time, enhancing transparency. The initiative also minimises human intervention, reducing chances of corruption.
Future expansion plans
The Gujarat government plans to expand the platform further with AI-based services in the Gujarati language. Integration across departments will be strengthened for better coordination.
These reforms will make governance more accessible, efficient, and citizen-centric in the coming years.
