Gujarat attracts major semiconductor investments
Gujarat Strengthens Semiconductor Ecosystem with Global Investments: Gujarat has received a major boost to its electronics and semiconductor sector with fresh investment proposals worth ₹1,600 crore from companies based in Japan, South Korea and Malaysia. The announcements were made during the Gujarat Semiconnect Conference held in Gandhinagar in 2026.
These investments aim to strengthen India’s semiconductor value chain, covering areas such as research and development, semiconductor chemicals, IC packaging, electronics manufacturing and high-tech innovation. The initiative supports India’s goal of becoming a global hub for chip manufacturing.
Static GK fact: India launched the Semiconductor Mission in 2021 with an incentive package of $10 billion to develop domestic chip manufacturing capabilities.
Horiba Group establishes R&D presence in Ahmedabad
Japan’s Horiba Group, through its subsidiary Horiba India Pvt Ltd, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Gujarat to establish a dedicated R&D centre in Ahmedabad.
The facility will focus on developing semiconductor-grade mass flow controllers and advanced instrumentation technologies used in chip fabrication. Such precision equipment is essential for maintaining controlled environments in semiconductor manufacturing.
The centre is expected to strengthen India’s domestic semiconductor research capabilities and reduce dependence on imported high-tech instrumentation.
Malaysia invests in electronics manufacturing at Sanand
Malaysia-based Hotayi Electronic has committed an investment of ₹250 crore to establish an electronics manufacturing facility at Sanand GIDC in Gujarat.
The plant will focus on manufacturing Solid State Drives (SSD) and memory modules, key components used in computing devices and data storage systems. The project is expected to generate employment for nearly 1,000 people.
Sanand has rapidly developed into a major electronics manufacturing hub, attracting semiconductor and electronics industries.
Static GK Tip: Sanand, located near Ahmedabad, earlier gained prominence as an automobile manufacturing hub before emerging as a semiconductor cluster.
Semiconductor chemicals and equipment production
Another major proposal includes a ₹750 crore project by Hi-Spec Ltd to manufacture semiconductor-grade hydrofluoric acid, a crucial chemical used in silicon wafer etching and cleaning processes.
Additionally, Kiansh International Technologies, in partnership with a South Korean technology company, plans to invest ₹25 crore to produce gas abatement systems and scrubbers used in semiconductor and solar manufacturing plants.
These facilities will strengthen upstream supply chains, ensuring the availability of critical materials and equipment required for chip fabrication.
Rohm Semiconductor partnership for IC packaging
Japanese chipmaker Rohm Semiconductor has partnered with Gujarat-based Suchi Semicon to introduce Integrated Circuit (IC) packaging and testing capabilities in India.
Packaging and testing represent the final stages of semiconductor manufacturing, where chips are assembled, protected and prepared for integration into electronic devices. The collaboration aims to serve both domestic and international semiconductor markets.
Static GK fact: The semiconductor manufacturing process typically includes four stages: design, fabrication, packaging and testing.
Boost to deep-tech startup ecosystem
Another important development is the ₹500 crore investment by Kaynes Semicon, a subsidiary of Kaynes Technology India Ltd, into Ahmedabad-based startup SpectraGaze Systems.
The investment will support research in outer space imaging technologies, advanced semiconductor applications and deep-tech innovation sectors.
This initiative reflects India’s growing focus on high-technology sectors combining semiconductor engineering with space and imaging technologies.
Strengthening India’s semiconductor ambitions
The combined investments aim to create a complete semiconductor ecosystem in Gujarat, covering raw materials, advanced equipment, manufacturing units, packaging facilities, research centres and technology startups.
Such diversification is expected to reduce import dependence, enhance supply chain resilience, and strengthen India’s role in the global semiconductor industry.
Gujarat’s industrial infrastructure, proactive policies and strategic clusters such as Sanand and Dholera have positioned the state as a key centre for semiconductor development in India.
