Gujarat joins Cruise Bharat Mission
Gujarat Leads India’s Cruise Tourism Push: Gujarat has become the first Indian state to officially support the Cruise Bharat Mission, launched on September 30, 2024. The initiative, led by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, aims to make India a global cruise tourism hub by 2029. Gujarat’s early participation marks a major leap in India’s maritime tourism vision.
Static GK fact: Gujarat has the longest coastline in India, measuring 2,340 km.
The move was formally announced in Ahmedabad and is focused on converting Gujarat’s coastal strength into a major tourist draw.
Cruise circuits to boost regional tourism
Gujarat is actively planning cruise circuits to connect key tourist locations along its coast. The government has identified several destinations for this effort: Diu, Veraval, Porbandar, Dwarka, Okha, Jamnagar, and the scenic Padala Island.
Each circuit is built around a 100-km cluster model for seamless travel:
- Padala Island – Rann of Kutch
- Porbandar – Veraval – Diu
- Dwarka – Okha – Jamnagar
These clusters allow tourists to explore religious, cultural, and natural sites with convenience and comfort. The popular Ghogha–Hazira Ro-Pax ferry route will also be integrated into this circuit plan.
New infrastructure plans
Until now, Gujarat lacked dedicated cruise terminals, despite its long coastline. Now, with its Cruise Bharat alignment, the state plans to build modern terminals similar to those in Mumbai, Cochin, Chennai, and Mormugao.
These terminals will serve as entry points for both domestic and international cruise liners, significantly improving the tourism experience.
Static GK Tip: Mormugao Port in Goa is one of India’s oldest ports, crucial for cruise operations.
The planned infrastructure includes berthing facilities, tourism centers, and eco-friendly boarding zones to match international standards.
Gujarat sets an example
Gujarat’s move is seen as a model for other Indian coastal states. Its strategy not only focuses on tourism infrastructure but also targets investment generation, local job creation, and promotion of heritage tourism.
The Cruise Bharat Mission envisions a 10x increase in cruise passengers by 2029, helping India tap into its vast yet underutilized coastal potential.
With Gujarat’s participation, the mission gains momentum, paving the way for a blue economy revolution in India.
