Gujarat at the Top of India’s Clean Energy Map
Gujarat Emerges as India’s Renewable Energy Powerhouse: Gujarat has emerged as India’s largest renewable energy–producing state, accounting for 16.5% of the country’s total renewable energy capacity as of 31 December 2025. With a total installed renewable capacity of 42.583 GW, the state has moved ahead of all others in clean power generation.
This achievement reflects long-term policy consistency, early adoption of renewables, and large-scale infrastructure development.
Gujarat’s performance directly supports India’s net-zero emission targets and long-term energy security goals.
Static GK fact: Gujarat has a long coastline of about 1,600 km, which offers strong wind potential and easy energy evacuation infrastructure.
Solar Energy Driving Capacity Expansion
Solar power forms the backbone of Gujarat’s renewable growth. The state has achieved 25,529.40 MW of installed solar capacity, making it one of India’s largest solar hubs.
Large solar parks such as Charanka, Radhanesda, and Dholera have enabled utility-scale power generation. These parks benefit from high solar irradiation and planned transmission corridors.
The Khavda Renewable Energy Park in Kutch has become a global landmark. Planned for 37.35 GW, it is already operational with 11.33 GW, making it the world’s largest renewable energy park under development.
Static GK Tip: Kutch district has one of the highest solar and wind potential zones in India due to its arid geography.
Leadership in Wind and Hybrid Projects
Gujarat ranks first in India for wind power capacity, with 14,820.94 MW installed by December 2025. The state was an early mover, launching India’s first Wind Power Policy in 1993.
Kutch district contributes the largest share of wind capacity. Other key districts include Jamnagar, Devbhumi Dwarka, Amreli, and Rajkot.
Hybrid energy has further strengthened Gujarat’s position. The state has commissioned 2,398.77 MW of wind–solar hybrid projects, improving grid stability and land-use efficiency.
Rooftop Solar and Agricultural Transformation
Gujarat is also a national leader in rooftop solar adoption. The state has crossed 11 lakh rooftop solar installations, generating 6,412.80 MW.
Residential rooftop solar promotion since 2016 has helped Gujarat contribute over 25% of India’s total rooftop solar capacity. Net-metering policies and subsidy support have accelerated adoption.
In agriculture, Gujarat has installed 12,700 off-grid solar pumps under the PM-KUSUM scheme.
This reduces diesel use, cuts electricity costs, and promotes sustainable irrigation.
Static GK fact: PM-KUSUM stands for Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan.
Policy Support and Investment Climate
Gujarat’s success is rooted in a strong policy ecosystem. The journey spans from the Wind Power Policy 1993 to the Gujarat Integrated Renewable Energy Policy 2025.
These policies remove capacity ceilings, simplify grid connectivity, and promote energy storage and hybrid systems. Digital platforms like Akshay Urja Setu ensure transparent and faster project approvals.
The state also attracts private investment in renewable manufacturing and green jobs. This policy clarity has positioned Gujarat as India’s clean energy growth engine.
