Survey Overview
First Phase of Underwater Survey Off Poompuhar Coast: The Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology (TNSDA) conducted a 12-day underwater survey along the Poompuhar coast. The focus was on exploring the remains of the ancient port city of Kaveripoompattinam, a significant trade hub during the Sangam period.
Static GK fact: Poompuhar was an important Chola port mentioned in Sangam literature and linked with maritime trade with Southeast Asia and the Roman Empire.
Survey Area
The survey spanned the coastal stretch from Thirumullaivasal to Neithavasal, tracing locations first documented by archaeologist S. R. Rao. The project aimed to identify submerged structures and artifacts that could shed light on ancient maritime activities.
Static GK Tip: S. R. Rao is renowned for his work in Indian marine archaeology, including the exploration of Dwarka and Poompuhar submerged sites.
Methodology
The underwater team employed systematic archaeological mapping, sonar scanning, and sample collection. Artifacts and structural data were recorded for further analysis. Short, frequent dives ensured minimal disruption of marine sediments while maximizing data retrieval.
Findings and Analysis
Preliminary observations suggest traces of ancient harbour structures and port-related artifacts. The collected data is currently under detailed examination to confirm the extent and nature of the submerged remains.
Static GK fact: The Sangam period (circa 3rd century BCE to 3rd century CE) saw Tamil kingdoms actively engage in overseas trade, and Poompuhar was a key node in these networks.
Future Plans
A second phase of the underwater survey is scheduled once sea conditions become favourable. The upcoming phase will aim to expand the surveyed area and potentially uncover additional structural remains.
Static GK Tip: The Tamil Nadu coastline has witnessed multiple marine archaeology projects aimed at preserving the submerged cultural heritage along the Bay of Bengal.
Significance
The survey contributes to a deeper understanding of ancient maritime infrastructure and trade networks. It also supports heritage conservation and strengthens the historical narrative of Tamil Nadu’s coastal regions.
Static GK fact: Kaveripoompattinam is mentioned in classical Tamil texts such as Silappatikaram and Manimekalai, highlighting its cultural and commercial importance.
