State visit of EU leadership
EU Leaders at India’s 77th Republic Day Celebrations: At the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission will undertake a State Visit to India from January 25 to 27, 2026. Their participation as Chief Guests at India’s 77th Republic Day marks a rare and symbolic diplomatic gesture.

High-level political engagements
During the visit, the EU leaders will call on President Droupadi Murmu and hold restricted and delegation-level talks with the Prime Minister. These engagements are expected to review the full spectrum of India–EU relations.
Key discussions will focus on political cooperation, economic ties, global challenges, and regional security. The interactions aim to provide strategic direction for future collaboration amid shifting global geopolitics.

16th India–EU Summit in New Delhi
The visit will culminate in the 16th India–EU Summit on January 27, 2026, to be co-chaired by the Indian Prime Minister and the two EU leaders. This summit represents a continuation of structured summit-level dialogue between the two partners.
Priority areas include trade, digital and emerging technologies, climate action, connectivity initiatives, and global security cooperation. These themes reflect shared interests in sustainable growth and strategic autonomy.
An India–EU Business Forum is also expected on the sidelines. This platform aims to strengthen commercial linkages and encourage investment flows between Indian and European enterprises.
Evolution of the strategic partnership
India and the European Union have been strategic partners since 2004. Over the years, the partnership has expanded beyond trade to encompass technology, clean energy, education, and people-to-people exchanges.
The 15th India–EU Summit was held virtually in July 2020, adapting to pandemic-related constraints. Momentum was significantly boosted by the historic visit of the EU College of Commissioners to India in February 2025, which enabled sector-specific cooperation.

Strategic and global significance
The presence of EU leaders at India’s Republic Day celebrations carries both symbolic and strategic value. Republic Day chief guest invitations traditionally reflect India’s foreign policy priorities.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this visit is expected to deepen the India–EU Strategic Partnership. It reinforces shared commitments to multilateralism, a rules-based international order, and cooperation on global challenges such as climate change and supply chain resilience.
The engagement signals India’s growing role as a key global partner and the EU’s recognition of India’s strategic importance in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
