Empowering Women and Children through a New National Vision

National Institute renamed to reflect new vision

Empowering Women and Children through a New National Vision: mThe government has renamed the National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development as the Savitribai Phule National Institute of Women and Child Development. This renaming reflects a renewed national commitment to advancing the welfare of women and children across India.

The move pays tribute to Savitribai Phule, a trailblazer in education and social reform, known for her efforts to uplift marginalized communities, particularly women.

Static GK fact: Savitribai Phule opened the first school for girls in Pune in 1848, a landmark in Indian education history.

Eastern India gets a new regional centre

A new regional centre of the Institute is set to begin operations in Ranchi, Jharkhand, on July 4, 2025. This centre will serve the eastern states—Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, and West Bengal—which until now depended on support from centres located in Lucknow and Guwahati.

By establishing a presence in Ranchi, the Institute aims to improve accessibility and efficiency for programme implementation in this region.

Supporting frontline workers

The Ranchi centre will provide training and capacity building for over 7 lakh workers in 115 districts. It will offer specialised courses, including an Advanced Diploma in Child Guidance and Counselling, to strengthen the skills of grassroots-level workers.

The goal is to ensure that local personnel receive timely, contextual training and resources to meet the needs of their communities effectively.

Focus on decentralised development

This development marks a significant step in decentralising key women and child welfare services. It enables region-specific solutions and encourages the local adaptation of national missions such as Mission Shakti, Mission Vatsalya, and Poshan 2.0.

Static GK fact: Mission Vatsalya focuses on child protection and care, integrating services for children’s safety and well-being.

Vision aligned with Viksit Bharat 2047

This initiative aligns with India’s long-term vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047, aiming to build an inclusive and empowered society. The regional centre in Ranchi is expected to play a vital role in bridging gaps in service delivery and training.

With better access and infrastructure, it becomes easier to bring about visible improvements in women’s empowerment and child development outcomes.

Strengthening national training capacity

The renamed Institute remains the country’s premier body for training and research in the field of women and child development. Along with existing regional centres in Bangalore, Mohali, Indore, Guwahati, and Lucknow, the Ranchi unit will further strengthen the national training network.

Both online and offline modes will be utilised to reach professionals in all parts of the country, improving the scope and scale of developmental outreach.
