Elayaperumal Remembered through New Memorial in Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin recently inaugurated a memorial and statue in Chidambaram to honour L. Elayaperumal, a veteran leader known for championing the rights of Scheduled Castes. His contributions to social justice in Tamil Nadu and beyond have left a lasting impact.
Born in Themmur village, located in Cuddalore district, Elayaperumal played a key role in shaping policies to uplift marginalised communities.
A National Role at a Young Age
At just 41 years old, Elayaperumal was appointed as the chairperson of a pioneering national-level panel in 1965. This was the first committee post-Independence tasked with examining the challenges faced by Scheduled Castes, including discrimination and lack of access to resources.
The eight-member committee undertook extensive travel across India and submitted a detailed report in 1969, highlighting gaps in social inclusion.

Key Reforms in Temple Governance
The findings of Elayaperumal’s committee laid the groundwork for changes in Tamil Nadu’s religious administration laws. The 1970 amendment to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Act was directly influenced by the committee’s suggestions.
This legislative change opened doors for greater representation of Scheduled Castes in temple affairs and religious institutions.

Political Legacy and Recognition

Though his recommendations were not adopted at the national level, they remain a significant reference for inclusive policy-making.
In 1998, the DMK government awarded him the inaugural Annal Ambedkar Award for his role in promoting social justice values inspired by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
