Legacy of K. Kamaraj in Education
Kumaraswami Kamaraj was born on 15 July 1903 in Virudhupatti, in the then Madras Presidency. He rose from humble beginnings to become the Chief Minister of Madras from 13 April 1954 to 2 October 1963.
His tenure is remembered for major educational reforms, especially the introduction of free and compulsory education and the mid-day meal scheme, which became a model for many other Indian states.
Role in Reducing Illiteracy and School Dropouts
Under Kamaraj’s leadership, school enrolment increased significantly, particularly in rural and underprivileged areas. The school dropout rate fell drastically as incentives such as free uniforms and meals encouraged more children to attend school.
