Solar milestone in Gujarat
Dhordo becomes Gujarat’s fourth fully solar powered village: Dhordo, a remote settlement in Gujarat’s Kutch district, has become the fourth solar village of the state. The achievement was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Samudra Se Samriddhi event in Bhavnagar on 20 September 2025. Dhordo is already globally recognized as the Best Tourism Village by UNWTO, and now it adds a renewable energy milestone.
Static GK fact: The headquarters of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) is located in Madrid, Spain.
Solarisation of Dhordo
The initiative comes under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. A total of 81 homes in the village were fitted with rooftop solar systems. The installed capacity reached 177 kW, expected to generate nearly 2.95 lakh units of electricity annually. Every household in Dhordo has been solarised, marking a complete transition.
Static GK fact: Gujarat has consistently led India in solar energy capacity, contributing significantly to the national renewable targets.
Economic impact on villagers
The shift to solar power has reduced expenses and created new income streams. Each home is estimated to save ₹16,064 annually, while the total annual benefit for the village exceeds ₹13 lakh through combined savings and sale of surplus energy. Government subsidies and loan assistance ensured affordability for households. The Sarpanch of Dhordo, Miyan Hussain, highlighted how this transformation has improved livelihoods.
Gujarat’s solar village model
Dhordo joins three earlier fully solarised villages in Gujarat. Modhera in Mehsana district became India’s first solar village in October 2022. It was followed by Sukhi in Kheda district and Masali in Banaskantha district. Gujarat now has four such villages, reinforcing its role as a clean energy pioneer.
Static GK Tip: India aims to achieve 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 and reach Net Zero emissions by 2070.
National and global significance
The success of Dhordo aligns with India’s broader sustainable development goals. It reduces financial pressure on households, ensures energy security through decentralised generation, and boosts the global image of Dhordo as a tourism and sustainability hub. The Rann Utsav festival, held in the White Desert of Kutch, will now showcase a village powered entirely by clean energy.
