Objectives of the Drill
The primary objective of Exercise Dharma Guardian is to enhance interoperability between the two forces. Interoperability ensures seamless coordination during joint missions.
The drill also aims to strengthen military collaboration and improve combined operational capabilities. A major focus is on conducting joint operations in semi-urban environments, reflecting modern conflict scenarios.
The exercise integrates modern military technologies, synchronised tactical manoeuvres, and coordinated planning procedures.
Tactical Components
During the two-week engagement, troops are involved in establishing a Temporary Operating Base. They also develop an Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) grid for enhanced battlefield awareness.
Other activities include setting up Mobile Vehicle Check Posts, conducting Cordon and Search Operations, and executing Heliborne Operations. House intervention drills are conducted to refine close-quarter combat skills.
These activities improve physical endurance, situational awareness, and joint combat readiness under realistic conditions.
Strategic Importance
Exercise Dharma Guardian serves as a vital pillar of India–Japan defence cooperation. It enhances operational synergy and builds mutual trust between the armed forces.
Both nations are key stakeholders in the Indo-Pacific region, where maritime security and regional stability remain critical concerns. Stronger defence collaboration supports a rules-based international order.
Static GK fact: India and Japan upgraded their relationship to a Special Strategic and Global Partnership in 2014. Japan’s capital is Tokyo, and its parliament is called the National Diet.
