Delhi Deploys Microalgae Air Tower for Urban Pollution Control: New Delhi has introduced India’s first Microalgae-based PureAir Tower along the Aerocity highway corridor to tackle rising vehicular pollution. The tower has been installed on a busy road median, transforming ordinary road infrastructure into an active air purification system.

This pilot initiative aims to address emissions from one of the capital’s high-traffic transport corridors, where pollution from vehicles remains a major environmental concern. The project demonstrates how biotechnology solutions can be integrated into urban infrastructure to improve air quality.

Working Mechanism of the Microalgae Tower

Unlike conventional smog towers, which rely on mechanical filters and high energy consumption, the Microalgae Air Tower uses photosynthetic microalgae to absorb pollutants naturally. These microscopic organisms capture harmful gases and particles directly from surrounding air.

The system removes carbon dioxide (CO₂), particulate matter (PM), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) at street level, where pollution exposure is highest for pedestrians and commuters. Through the process of photosynthesis, these pollutants are converted into oxygen and algal biomass, making the purification process environmentally sustainable.
