Cleanliness mission gets a scientific boost
DBT leads Swachhata Pakhwada 2025 with 188 initiatives: The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) under the Ministry of Science & Technology took a strong step forward this May. From May 1 to 15, 2025, the department observed Swachhata Pakhwada with full enthusiasm. Across its headquarters in New Delhi, various autonomous institutions, and public sector undertakings, DBT carried out a whopping 188 activities. This wasn’t just about sweeping roads — it reflected a deeper aim of spreading cleanliness, sustainability, and awareness using science as a driver.
Launch with a powerful message
Everything began with a pledge ceremony on May 1 at the CGO Complex, where the DBT Secretary led the staff in taking a collective vow for cleanliness. It wasn’t just symbolic — from there, a full-blown action plan followed, combining modern technology with civic duty.
What made it unique?
Rather than sticking to routine drives, the DBT focused on practical improvements. They installed e-waste bins and sanitary napkin disposal machines, showing their concern for both electronic waste management and women’s hygiene. Offices even got high-capacity waste shredder machines to handle disposal more efficiently.
These actions help build a strong model for how government departments can integrate waste management at an institutional level — something students and aspirants can draw inspiration from.
Health and hygiene outreach
To push public health, DBT also arranged health check-ups, taught Basic Life Support (BLS) and CPR, and hosted awareness sessions on topics like single-use plastic and stress management. These aren’t just office sessions; they offer real-world tools that can save lives and improve habits.
Community matters
Real impact comes when change touches all layers of society. That’s why DBT volunteers visited old age homes, the National Association for the Blind, and nearby slum areas. Activities included clean-up drives, plantation programs, and even community runs and nature walks.
One touching initiative was the inauguration of a ladies’ room in office premises — a step forward in creating a more inclusive workplace.
Arts, culture and awareness
Cleanliness met creativity through nukkad nataks (street plays), painting competitions, and poster-making sessions by students. These not only helped spread awareness but also got the youth actively involved.
Monitoring and reward
The entire campaign was closely watched by a review committee. Regular meetings ensured momentum wasn’t lost. To keep spirits high, awards were given to the top three performing offices. The recognition was handed out by the Joint Secretary (Admin), DBT — a proud moment for the winners and a motivation for others.
Long-term goals
This isn’t just a two-week event. DBT aims to promote scientific thinking in cleanliness, instill sustainable waste practices, and encourage more inclusive participation — especially from women, youth, and marginalised communities. It’s a perfect example of blending science with social responsibility.
