Nation’s First Genetic Reserve for Endangered Mountain Species
Darjeeling Zoo Sets Up India’s First DNA Vault for Himalayan Wildlife: Marking a first in the country, Darjeeling’s Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park has initiated a DNA preservation programme for wildlife species found in snow-clad habitats. Partnering with the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, the zoo has created a genetic bank aimed at preserving the DNA of endangered animals like the red panda and the snow leopard. A total of 60 DNA samples have already been secured and stored under ultra-cold cryogenic conditions.
The Role of DNA Banking in Conservation
This project adopts advanced cryopreservation methods, using liquid nitrogen to maintain animal DNA at extremely low temperatures for future use. By securing the genetic code of rare Himalayan species, this effort ensures a long-term reserve for scientific study, reproduction programs, and even potential species revival. It signals a modern conservation strategy that complements habitat preservation with genetic safeguarding.
Darjeeling Zoo’s Global Conservation Status Strengthens
Located at an altitude of over 2,100 meters, this Himalayan zoo is already a key institution for breeding and protecting cold-climate species. With an area of 67.8 acres, it plays a vital role in protecting creatures such as the Himalayan wolf, red panda, and snow leopard. The introduction of a DNA repository adds to its scientific credentials, positioning the zoo as a leader not just in wildlife care but in cutting-edge biological research.
Advancing Wildlife Genetics in India
The collaboration with CCMB Hyderabad marks a turning point in India’s use of biotechnology for environmental goals. A dedicated research space has been created within the zoo, enabling long-term genetic analysis, conservation genetics, and biodiversity planning. This initiative puts India on the map in terms of using molecular tools for preserving fragile ecosystems, particularly in high-altitude and climate-sensitive regions.
