NGT decision
Construction Halt near Pallikaranai Marshland: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered a complete halt to construction within one kilometre of the Pallikaranai Marshland in Chennai. This ruling came after reports highlighted landfilling and building activity threatening the fragile wetland ecosystem.
Suo motu action
The NGT acted suo motu based on media coverage of violations inside the Perumbakkam wetland. It identified Perumbakkam village, situated just 246 metres from the marsh boundary, as one of the directly impacted sites.
Ramsar recognition
The Pallikaranai Marshland was declared a Ramsar Site in 2022, recognising its global ecological importance. As one of the last remaining natural wetlands in Chennai, it plays a vital role in storing excess rainwater and reducing urban flooding.
Static GK fact: India has 82 Ramsar Sites as of 2025, covering over 1.3 million hectares.
Buffer zone demarcation
The Tamil Nadu State Wetland Authority (TNSWA) has marked a provisional one-kilometre buffer zone using topographical and hydrological assessment. This scientific approach ensures that surrounding human activities do not disturb the wetland’s natural functions.
Importance of flood mitigation
The marshland acts as a natural sponge, absorbing floodwaters during the monsoon and recharging groundwater levels. With Chennai prone to heavy rainfall and urban flooding, protecting the marsh has become a critical urban planning measure.
Static GK Tip: Wetlands globally cover nearly 6% of the Earth’s surface and provide flood control, water purification, and biodiversity support.
Way forward
Experts suggest strengthening wetland governance, enforcing strict monitoring, and promoting community awareness. Balancing urban expansion with ecological conservation remains a challenge, but the NGT ruling has set a strong precedent for protecting urban wetlands across India.
