Chicory Disclosure Norms in Coffee Regulation: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has mandated that the percentage of chicory content must be clearly displayed on the front of coffee packs.
This move strengthens transparency in packaged beverages. Consumers can now clearly identify the composition of coffee-chicory blends before purchase.
What Is Chicory
Chicory is a blue-flowered perennial plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. The plant is widely cultivated for its roots and leaves.
The roasted root is processed into powder and mixed with coffee. It enhances colour, aroma, and bitterness, giving a stronger taste profile.

Use of Chicory in Coffee

In South India, especially in filter coffee traditions, chicory is commonly blended with coffee powder to produce a thicker decoction.

Regulatory Framework

The regulation applies to all packaged coffee-chicory blends sold in India. Pure coffee products remain unaffected.
