Bamboo Project in Adilabad
A pilot bamboo plantation project was recently launched in Mullagutta 2 village, Adilabad district of Telangana, focusing on the welfare of the Kolam tribal community. This initiative falls under the Green India Challenge and aims to restore livelihoods and tackle environmental degradation.
Covering five acres of land donated by philanthropist Tekam Rao Ji Patel, the project is designed to ensure a sustainable bamboo supply for the Kolam tribes, empowering them to revive traditional crafts and generate income.

The Kolam Tribe and Their Heritage
The Kolam tribe belongs to the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) category and resides mainly in Telangana, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh. Traditionally, they rely on agriculture, animal husbandry, and forest-based work for sustenance.
They speak the Kolami language, a Dravidian tongue without a written script, and share cultural similarities with the Gond tribe. Their society is patrilineal, organized into clans like Chal Deve, Pach Deve, and Sat Deve.
