A Major Healthcare Boost for Delhi’s Elderly
Ayushman Vay Vandana Scheme: Delhi’s ₹10 Lakh Healthcare Support for Seniors: In a significant step toward inclusive healthcare, the Ayushman Vay Vandana scheme was recently launched by the Delhi government to support senior citizens aged 70 and above. The initiative was inaugurated by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta in the presence of Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. Aimed at elderly residents of the capital, this scheme combines central and state-level efforts to provide ₹10 lakh annual medical coverage, making it one of the most comprehensive senior citizen health schemes in India.
How the Scheme Works
The scheme merges two major healthcare schemes: the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), which provides ₹5 lakh coverage, and an additional ₹5 lakh sponsored by the Delhi government. Together, this unified cover ensures that seniors in Delhi have access to extensive, cashless medical treatment. The dual-layer system helps reduce out-of-pocket expenditure and strengthens public-private healthcare collaboration.
Eligibility and Required Documents
To be eligible, applicants must be permanent residents of Delhi and aged 70 years or above. A valid Aadhaar card is required at the time of registration. Seniors already covered under any other health plan must decide between staying with their existing policy or shifting to the Ayushman Vay Vandana scheme. This ensures transparency and avoids overlapping of government benefits.
Key Benefits of the Scheme
Senior citizens covered under the scheme receive a health insurance package worth ₹10 lakh annually. Treatment is cashless at all listed hospitals, including both government facilities and private hospitals empanelled under AB PM-JAY. Beyond hospitalisation, the scheme also includes free diagnostics and annual check-ups, ensuring preventive healthcare. Beneficiaries receive a personalised health card with details like medical history and emergency contact info, allowing smooth access to healthcare services.
Hospital Access and Easy Treatment Options
All public hospitals in Delhi are automatically part of the scheme. For private care, the Delhi health agency empanels hospitals based on quality and infrastructure standards. Beneficiaries can use the PM-JAY hospital finder portal to identify nearby hospitals across India. This pan-India access means that even if seniors travel outside Delhi, they still receive full coverage and treatment support.
