Expansion of Innovation in Frontier Regions
Atal Tinkering Labs Boost Innovation in Jammu and Kashmir: The Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) under NITI Aayog has announced the launch of 500 new Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) in Jammu & Kashmir. This expansion is part of the Frontier Region Programme, which focuses on underserved and remote regions of India. The initiative was inaugurated on 25 September 2025 at the University of Kashmir.

Investment for Future Skills
An estimated ₹100 crore investment will be made for the J&K ATLs, making the Union Territory the largest beneficiary of this programme. These labs will provide access to 3D printing, robotics, artificial intelligence kits, coding platforms, and STEM resources. This step will enable students to build future-ready skills and contribute to the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
Static GK fact: The Atal Tinkering Lab initiative was first launched in 2016 to promote a culture of innovation among students.
Role of ATL Sarthi
AIM also introduced the ATL Sarthi initiative, which will provide structured support to schools and teachers. It includes mentorship support, training modules, peer-to-peer collaboration, and performance monitoring. The University of Kashmir has partnered with AIM to coordinate teacher training and strengthen capacity-building efforts across J&K.
Static GK Tip: The University of Kashmir, established in 1948, is one of the oldest universities in Jammu and Kashmir.
Private Sector Partnerships
The innovation ecosystem in J&K will also receive support from the private sector. Companies such as Boeing India, Amazon India, Pi Jam Foundation, and Learning Links Foundation have pledged investments and curriculum content support. These collaborations will help sustain the ATLs and bring global expertise into regional schools.
Broader National Impact
The rollout of 500 labs in J&K is part of a larger target of 2,500 labs in India’s frontier and underrepresented regions. By empowering students in tribal and remote areas, the government aims to decentralize innovation and ensure equitable access to technological tools across the country.
