Improving life on highways
Apna Ghar Scheme for Truck Driver Welfare: The Government of India launched the Apna Ghar scheme to improve living and rest conditions for truck drivers. These drivers are the backbone of India’s logistics sector and often work in poor conditions with little rest.
This initiative provides dedicated resting spaces at fuel stations located along national highways, ensuring comfort and hygiene for truckers during long-distance travel.
Addressing a longstanding issue
The scheme was initiated by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas in response to growing concerns over driver fatigue, health issues, and unsafe rest spots.
Truck drivers often sleep in unsafe, unclean areas, risking their health and road safety. Apna Ghar aims to provide safe, clean, and accessible facilities.
Comfort-focused facilities
Each Apna Ghar unit includes dormitory-style accommodation, with over 4,611 beds available as of July 1, 2025.
Facilities offered include:
- Clean toilets
- Bathing areas
- Purified drinking water
- Access to restaurants or dhabas
- Self-cooking areas at some locations
These features help truckers rest and recover comfortably before continuing their journey.
Role of public sector oil companies
The implementation is led by Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), such as IOCL, HPCL, and BPCL. They manage the infrastructure at retail fuel outlets, where the 368 units have already been set up.
The units are strategically placed along key transport corridors to support the nationwide trucking network.
Static GK fact: India has over 7.5 million truck drivers, who transport nearly 70% of India’s freight.
Digital access for better reach
To improve accessibility, a dedicated mobile application has been launched. Through this app, truckers can:
- Locate the nearest Apna Ghar
- Book a bed
- Register as users
The app has seen high registration and download rates. User feedback indicates high satisfaction levels with both cleanliness and convenience.
Government focus on logistics workers
Apna Ghar showcases the government’s growing emphasis on infrastructure for unorganised sector workers. Truck drivers, a crucial but often neglected workforce, now have a national welfare framework supporting their daily needs.
This initiative not only ensures better working conditions but also contributes to road safety, supply chain efficiency, and driver dignity.
Static GK Tip: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways also promotes initiatives for highway amenities like wayside amenities (WSAs) and driver restrooms across national highways.
