AIIMS sets a new benchmark
AIIMS Delhi leads robotic surgery training milestone: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi has become the first government medical college in India to offer training on the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System. This marks a turning point in medical education, bringing cutting-edge surgical innovation within the country’s premier public institution. The installation was made at the Skills, E-Learning and Telemedicine (SET) Facility.
Static GK fact: AIIMS Delhi was established in 1956 and is consistently ranked as India’s top medical institute.
About the da Vinci robotic system
The da Vinci Surgical Robot, developed by Intuitive Surgical (USA), is one of the world’s most advanced robotic systems for minimally invasive surgery. It allows surgeons to perform complex operations through small incisions, improving recovery times.
The system offers 3D high-definition vision, enhanced dexterity, and precise control, making it useful in urology, gynecology, oncology, and general surgery.
Static GK Tip: The first robotic-assisted surgery using da Vinci was performed in 2000 in the United States.
Dual robotic training hub
The SET Facility at AIIMS now houses both the da Vinci Surgical Robot and the Hugo Robotic Trainer by Medtronic. This makes AIIMS the only institution in India with two robotic systems exclusively dedicated for structured training.
The facility provides simulators, trainers, and manikins, ensuring learners gain safe and supervised experience before handling live cases.
Training opportunities
Training at AIIMS will be open to medical students, residents, faculty members, nurses, and healthcare professionals. This multidisciplinary exposure aims to democratize robotic surgical learning, which earlier required training in foreign institutions.
AIIMS Director Dr M Srinivas emphasized that this initiative would boost India’s capacity in robotic surgery and prepare the next generation of globally competitive surgeons.
National and global significance
The milestone positions AIIMS Delhi as a global hub for surgical innovation. It strengthens India’s healthcare sector by reducing dependence on external institutions for advanced surgical skill development.
It also aligns with India’s push to integrate technology-driven healthcare, ensuring better patient outcomes, shorter hospital stays, and wider adoption of robotic procedures in the coming years.
Static GK fact: The first robotic surgery in India was conducted in 2002 at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi.
