Adani Group Launches India’s First Off-Grid Green Hydrogen Plant: Adani Group has marked a historic moment in India’s clean energy journey by launching the country’s first off-grid green hydrogen plant in Kutch, Gujarat. This 5 MW pilot facility, set up by Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL), operates independently of the main power grid. The goal? Showcasing a future where hydrogen can be created using only solar energy, without relying on conventional power sources.
This move is more than just a technological feat. It aligns perfectly with the government’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to cut down India’s fossil fuel dependence and push for cleaner industrial solutions.
Green energy without compromise
The plant uses solar-powered electrolysis—a process that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen. Unlike traditional methods that emit carbon dioxide, this process produces zero harmful emissions. And to ensure smooth functioning even when sunlight is limited, the system includes a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This lets the plant continue producing hydrogen round the clock.
The design also includes a smart, closed-loop electrolyser system that adapts in real-time to changing solar inputs. So even on a cloudy day, the plant runs efficiently without interruptions. It’s a smart solution to one of the biggest hurdles in renewable energy—intermittency.
A major boost for the hydrogen mission
This project directly supports India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM). Launched to encourage clean hydrogen production and reduce costly energy imports, the mission aims to make India self-reliant in energy. By showcasing that large-scale, off-grid hydrogen production is not just a dream but a reality, Adani’s plant sets a benchmark.
It also proves that green hydrogen—the cleanest form of hydrogen—is ready for use in industries that have traditionally been hard to decarbonize, like fertilizers, steel, and heavy transport.
Expanding towards a green hydrogen hub
The pilot facility is just the beginning. ANIL has bigger plans in Mundra, Gujarat, where it is building an integrated Green Hydrogen Hub. This ecosystem will cover the production of green ammonia, green methanol, sustainable aviation fuel, and components like electrolysers and solar modules.
These developments position India as a potential global leader in green hydrogen, opening doors to both domestic and international markets. As countries worldwide move toward cleaner energy, India’s presence in this space will be crucial.
