On September 8, 2025, Abhimanyu Mishra achieved a landmark victory in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, by defeating World Champion D Gukesh in Round 5 of the FIDE Grand Swiss 2025. The match lasted 61 moves, where Gukesh committed a critical error on the 12th move, which Mishra capitalized on with precision.
With this, Mishra became the youngest player in history to beat a reigning world champion in classical chess, surpassing a record that had stood for over three decades.
