Tamil Nadu Hikes Pensions for Former MLAs and MLCs: The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister recently announced a revision in the monthly pensions provided to former Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and Legislative Council (MLCs). This move is aimed at supporting retired public representatives with better financial stability. From April 1, 2025, former MLAs will receive ₹35,000 per month, up from the current ₹30,000. This ₹5,000 hike reflects the state’s acknowledgment of the services rendered by former legislators.

Family Pension and Medical Support Reforms

In addition to the MLA pension hike, the family pension provided to dependents of deceased MLAs and MLCs has also been increased. The revised family pension will now be ₹17,500, up from ₹15,000. The state has also revised the medical allowance offered to retired MLAs and MLCs, pushing the figure from ₹75,000 to ₹1 lakh annually. This enhancement is especially vital considering the increasing cost of medical treatments, particularly for older citizens who require ongoing care.
