Swachh Survekshan 2024 and the Super Swachh League
Indore Tops Swachh Survekshan 2024: India’s Cleanest City for the 7th Year: Swachh Survekshan, launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), is the world’s largest urban cleanliness survey. In its 9th edition, Swachh Survekshan 2024 introduced a new model—the Super Swachh League, which recognizes cities that have consistently performed in the top three ranks for at least two out of the last three years. The league ensures population-based fair evaluation, encouraging cities to maintain long-term cleanliness goals.
Indore’s Cleanliness Legacy
Indore has emerged as the cleanest city in India for the seventh consecutive time, cementing its status as a role model in urban sanitation. The city has achieved 100% door-to-door waste collection, implemented AI-driven waste tracking, and operates the country’s largest Bio-CNG plant. Active citizen participation, frequent cleanliness drives, and a rewards-based system keep public engagement high. Indore’s holistic approach showcases how technology and community effort can transform urban hygiene.
Top Clean Cities in Each Category
To promote inclusivity, cities were grouped based on population size. In the Very Small City category, Panchgani (Maharashtra) and Patan (Gujarat) were top performers. Among Million Plus Cities, Indore, Navi Mumbai, Surat, and NDMC (New Delhi) earned top honors. Tirupati, Ambikapur, Chandigarh, and Noida also featured in other categories, proving that cities across different sizes can achieve cleanliness excellence.
Cleanliness and Competition: Why It Matters
The Super Swachh League fosters healthy competition, prevents bias towards larger cities, and drives sustainable waste management practices. It rewards consistency over one-time achievements and inspires more innovation, infrastructure upgrades, and public accountability in urban spaces. It also supports India’s broader goal of making cities climate-resilient and livable.
