India Launches ‘Operation Brahma’ to Aid Earthquake-Hit Myanmar: On March 29, 2025, India launched Operation Brahma, a swift humanitarian initiative to assist earthquake-affected Myanmar, following a high-level phone call between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. The devastating quake, which claimed over 1,600 lives, left many buried under debris, particularly in the politically fragile Sagaing region. Relief Operations and Deployment Strategy
Within hours, C-130 aircraft of the Indian Air Force were airborne from Hindon Airbase, delivering medical kits, tents, food supplies, and rescue gear to Yangon. This was followed by two more sorties, reinforcing India’s role as a regional first responder. A field hospital from Agra is also en route, staffed by 118 personnel from the Shatrujeet Brigade and led by Lt. Col. Jagneet Gill, equipped with surgical, dental, and women’s care units, replicating its success in Operation Dost (Turkey, 2023).
Strategic and Diplomatic Considerations
Despite Myanmar’s ongoing internal conflicts between junta forces and Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs), India is channeling its support through the Myanmar government. However, logistical hurdles exist, particularly in areas outside junta control. Sea and air routes are being prioritized, though land corridors via Manipur and Mizoram may be used if regional access stabilizes. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) remains in contact with the two million-strong Indian diaspora in Myanmar, confirming that no Indian casualties have been reported so far.
Long-Term Vision and Global Collaboration
India’s relief plan extends beyond emergency supplies. Four naval vessels, carrying 50 tonnes of aid, are ready for deployment under HADR protocols. The government also plans to send engineering teams for rehabilitation efforts. India’s approach—compassionate, coordinated, and strategic—is being hailed globally. PM Modi emphasized that India would remain a steadfast partner in Myanmar’s recovery, reinforcing regional solidarity in times of crisis.
