Longstanding India-Russia Naval Cooperation Continues
India and Russia Conduct 14th Edition of Naval Exercise INDRA 2025: The INDRA 2025 maritime exercise, held from March 28 to April 2, marks the 14th edition of bilateral naval drills between India and Russia. Taking place off Chennai and in the Bay of Bengal, this strategic engagement reflects the enduring defence partnership and maritime trust built over two decades. Since its launch in 2003, INDRA has consistently focused on deepening military cooperation, particularly in operational synergy and tactical coordination at sea.
Two-Phase Exercise Enhances Tactical Readiness
INDRA 2025 is split into two parts. The Harbour Phase (March 28–30) in Chennai includes subject matter exchanges, pre-sail briefings, and ship visits, fostering mutual learning and cultural interaction. The Sea Phase (March 31–April 2) showcases live-fire exercises, anti-air operations, helicopter landings, and complex naval manoeuvres in the Bay of Bengal. These activities are designed to simulate high-threat scenarios and test interoperability in real time.
Participation of Advanced Naval Assets
The Indian Navy has deployed INS Rana, INS Kuthar, and a P-8I maritime patrol aircraft, known for its long-range reconnaissance and anti-submarine capabilities. From the Russian Navy, three powerful warships—RFS Pechanga, RFS Rezkiy, and RFS Aldar Tsydenzhapov—are participating. The mix of frigates and patrol aircraft underscores both nations’ commitment to conducting joint maritime security operations.
Strengthening Regional Stability and Defence Diplomacy
INDRA 2025 is not just a defence drill—it is a message of commitment to peaceful, secure, and cooperative maritime zones in the Indo-Pacific. As global tensions shift, this bilateral initiative reinforces India’s strategic positioning and Russia’s growing interest in the Indian Ocean Region. It also enhances naval doctrine alignment, paving the way for more sophisticated collaborations in anti-submarine warfare, surveillance, and humanitarian assistance.
