Rural Transformation Plan with Renewed Funding
Tamil Nadu Sanctions ₹1,087 Crore for Phase II of Anaithu Grama Anna Revival Scheme: The Tamil Nadu government has granted administrative sanction of ₹1,087 crore to implement the second phase of the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam (AGAMT-II) for the year 2025–26. This ambitious rural development scheme focuses on upgrading basic infrastructure in village panchayats, with the goal of achieving balanced and inclusive growth. With this move, Tamil Nadu reaffirms its commitment to grassroots development and decentralised planning.
Infrastructure Upgrades in Over 2,300 Panchayats
AGAMT-II is spearheaded by the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department and will be implemented in 2,329 village panchayats during 2025–26. The programme takes a phased approach to improve roads, streetlights, market access, and pond rejuvenation. With Tamil Nadu home to 12,482 village panchayats, the phased implementation ensures consistent and focused improvement across all rural areas. These developments not only enhance living standards but also support rural livelihoods and commerce.
Community-Led Decision-Making
One of the scheme’s key strengths lies in its bottom-up planning approach. Block Level Committees identify and shortlist development projects for each village. These proposals are then subject to approval by a Special Grama Sabha, ensuring that the projects truly reflect community needs and priorities. This participatory governance model boosts transparency, local ownership, and long-term sustainability of rural assets.
Special Focus on Marginalised Habitations
To ensure equitable development, the scheme mandates that at least 30% of the funds be allocated for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) habitations. This provision highlights Tamil Nadu’s emphasis on social justice and inclusive growth, ensuring that disadvantaged groups receive focused support in terms of infrastructure and amenities. From streetlights to water bodies, the initiative promises to bridge infrastructure gaps in marginalised communities.
