A Historic Tribute to India’s Meteorological Journey
India’s First Open-Air Art Wall Museum Celebrates 150 Years of IMD: India has added a creative chapter to its scientific legacy by launching the country’s first Open-Air Art Wall Museum at Mausam Bhawan in New Delhi. Inaugurated by Dr. Jitendra Singh on February 18, 2025, the initiative commemorates 150 years of the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The museum brings weather science to life with 38 vibrant murals, transforming the walls of IMD’s headquarters into an engaging public art gallery.
Murals That Speak the Language of Weather and Culture
The murals span centuries of progress, blending scientific achievements with cultural symbolism. Highlights include illustrations of cyclone alerts, monsoon tracking, and the development of forecasting technology. Cultural elements such as Kalidasa’s “Meghaduta” and Tansen’s legendary musical connection to rain highlight how deeply weather is embedded in India’s heritage. This artistic storytelling gives common citizens a chance to understand IMD’s vital role in disaster management, agriculture, and climate resilience.
Delhi Street Art: Blending Creativity with Science
This visually rich museum is a collaborative effort between IMD and Delhi Street Art, an urban art collective founded by the late Yogesh Saini. Known for transforming public spaces, the team has creatively showcased IMD’s legacy. At the launch, Dr. Jitendra Singh praised the project as a symbol of how art can simplify complex scientific themes, making meteorology more accessible and engaging for the general public.
A Vision for the Future of Weather Science
While the museum honors the past, it also hints at what lies ahead. India aims to enhance its climate prediction models, expand early warning systems for heatwaves, cyclones, and floods, and build public awareness through projects like this. By bridging the gap between science and society, IMD sets a precedent for other institutions to follow in public engagement.
