Launch of Stealth Frigate Tavasya
Tavasya Stealth Frigate: A Milestone in India’s Naval Modernisation: India achieved a major naval milestone with the launch of the stealth frigate ‘Tavasya’ on March 22, 2025, at Goa Shipyard Limited. The ceremony, officiated by Raksha Rajya Mantri Sanjay Seth, reflects India’s commitment to strengthening its maritime capabilities through indigenous defence production, aligning with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Project 1135.6 and Strategic Collaboration
‘Tavasya’ is the second ship under Project 1135.6, part of the Talwar-class frigate series initially built with Russian support. While early versions were constructed in Russia, the recent shift to Indian shipyards demonstrates a transition towards self-reliance and technological indigenisation in naval shipbuilding.
Design and Combat Specifications
With a length of 124.8 metres, beam of 15.2 metres, and draught of 4.5 metres, ‘Tavasya’ displaces 3,600 tons and can cruise at 28 knots. The ship uses gas turbine propulsion for agility. Its stealth features come from radar-absorbing materials and a low radar cross-section. Armed with the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, Shtil-1 SAMs, and a 100 mm naval gun, it also has anti-submarine warfare tools like torpedoes and rocket launchers.
Indigenous Defence Capability Boost
The construction of ‘Tavasya’ marks the maturation of India’s defence industrial base, especially in systems integration. Incorporating BrahMos, sonar, and other indigenous technologies signals progress toward comprehensive maritime autonomy, positioning India as a regional naval power.
Operational and Strategic Outlook
Following the launch of its sister ship ‘Triput’ in July 2024, the addition of ‘Tavasya’ enhances the multi-role combat capabilities of the Indian Navy. These ships are critical for missions ranging from surface warfare to anti-submarine operations, reinforcing India’s presence in strategic waters and securing blue water naval ambitions.
