A Big Push for Railway Station Transformation
Karnataka’s 61 Railway Stations to be Redeveloped under Amrit Bharat Scheme: The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) has emerged as a flagship initiative by Indian Railways to upgrade infrastructure and passenger experience at over 1,300 railway stations across the country. In a significant move, 61 railway stations in Karnataka have been selected for redevelopment under this scheme, with a vision to create modern, efficient, and inclusive transport hubs.
Objectives of the Scheme
The ABSS, launched in February 2023, seeks to transform railway stations through master planning and phased implementation. Its goal is not just aesthetic improvement, but to enhance passenger comfort, ensure accessibility, and promote multimodal transport integration. Stations are being designed to serve as future-ready nodes that accommodate the needs of diverse travelers, including the differently abled and elderly.
Features that Redefine Travel
Under this scheme, passengers can expect a host of new facilities like clean waiting lounges, modern restrooms, food courts, and digital signage in multiple languages. Traffic circulation will be improved by redesigning entry and exit points, expanding approach roads, and providing sufficient parking zones. There’s a strong focus on inter-modal connectivity, enabling smooth transfer between trains, buses, autos, and other public transport modes.
Structural and Green Innovations
The station buildings will undergo structural enhancements, including the introduction of ballastless tracks, known for reduced noise and vibration. As part of the sustainability push, energy-efficient lighting, rainwater harvesting, and green landscaping will be implemented. Some stations may even have roof plazas, transforming station roofs into commercial and public utility spaces.
Funding and Execution Challenges
The redevelopment process involves navigating statutory clearances and technical complexities, which may impact timelines. Funding for the scheme is drawn from Plan Head – 53 ‘Customer Amenities’, and coordinated by the respective railway zones. In Karnataka, the total investment in the redevelopment of 61 stations is projected at ₹2,000 crore, showing a strong commitment to modern infrastructure.
Karnataka’s Urban Rail Makeover
Within Karnataka, 15 stations under the Bengaluru Division—including Bangarpet and Whitefield—are set to undergo major upgrades. An additional 13 stations will be rejuvenated with urban design elements, aiming to become social and commercial activity centres. These stations will be equipped with shopping zones, accessibility features, and family-friendly spaces, serving as local development catalysts.
