India at the Forefront of Green Governance
India Champions Green Growth at World Government Summit 2025: India made a strong statement on global sustainability at the World Government Summit (WGS) 2025, held in Dubai from February 11 to 13. Represented by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, the country underscored its leadership in climate resilience and low-carbon governance. The summit’s central theme, “Shaping Future Governments,” provided India with a platform to share its achievements and challenges in aligning climate priorities with administrative policies.
Driving Clean Technology and Climate Infrastructure
In high-level discussions, Minister Yadav presented India’s advancements in clean mobility and green infrastructure. He highlighted the adoption of electric vehicles, investment in green hydrogen, and infrastructure geared toward climate adaptation. He also made a strong case for climate finance, urging developed countries to assist emerging economies in reaching their Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The call was made amid growing environmental stress and the urgency of closing the technology-finance gap for climate action.
Mission LiFE: India’s Global Message
A major focus of India’s message at the summit was the promotion of Mission LiFE, or Lifestyle for Environment, a global initiative championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Minister Yadav explained how the campaign encourages behavioural change, urging citizens to shift to more sustainable habits—like conserving water, cutting down on plastic use, and adopting public transport. He emphasized that collective action through lifestyle choices could significantly mitigate global environmental challenges.
Renewable Energy and Food Security Push
India reaffirmed its commitment to clean energy, stating its target to reach 500 GW of renewable capacity by 2030, of which 200 GW has already been installed. This positions India among the global frontrunners in renewable energy growth. In the agricultural sector, Minister Yadav also introduced India’s initiative to promote 109 climate-resilient seed varieties, designed to endure extreme weather conditions like floods and droughts. This innovation is critical to ensuring food security and protecting rural livelihoods from climate disruption.
India’s Global Role and the Road Ahead
At the summit, India reiterated the need for greater international cooperation to bridge the gap in access to green technology and sustainable infrastructure. Minister Yadav stressed that developed countries must support the Global South, not just in words, but through real investments and knowledge-sharing. India’s voice at the summit reflected its evolving identity as a global climate leader, aligning with earlier commitments made at COP summits and reinforcing its Net Zero target for 2070. As the world’s most populous democracy, India’s sustainability model is now central to shaping a balanced, inclusive environmental future.
