Siachen Day 2025: Honouring India’s Frozen Frontline Warriors: Every year on April 13, India observes Siachen Day to honour the soldiers stationed on the world’s highest battlefield—the Siachen Glacier. It was on this very date in 1984 that Operation Meghdoot was launched, enabling the Indian Army to occupy key mountain passes like Sia La and Bilafond La. This pre-emptive move prevented Pakistan from taking control of the glacier, which holds enormous strategic value in the Karakoram Range.

Operation Meghdoot: A Mission of Ice and Grit

The operation wasn’t just a military exercise; it was a feat of human endurance. Launched in response to intelligence reports of a Pakistani plan to seize the area, Indian forces took bold action at heights nearing 20,000 feet. Leaders like Lt. Gen. Manohar Lal Chibber, Lt. Gen. P.N. Hoon, and Maj. Gen. Shiv Sharma played crucial roles. What made this mission unique was the coordination between the Indian Army and Air Force, especially under such harsh climatic conditions.

Air Warriors of the Frozen Heights

The Indian Air Force (IAF) had already been active in the region since 1978, with Chetak helicopters being the first to land on the glacier. During and after Operation Meghdoot, the IAF provided essential support, flying in troops, equipment, and food supplies using aircraft like the An-12, An-32, IL-76, Mi-17, and Cheetah helicopters. Without this critical air bridge, the operation might never have succeeded in such a remote, icy expanse.

Why Siachen Matters: More Than Just Snow

The Siachen Glacier is not only a symbol of sacrifice but also a strategic jewel. It borders Gilgit Baltistan, the Shaksgam Valley, and Ladakh, guarding access routes like the Karakoram Pass. Its control allows India to monitor movements from both China and Pakistan. The 1984 operation ensured that no part of this terrain—especially the undefined point NJ9842—could be used to encroach upon Indian territory.

Eternal Vigilance on the Glacier

Even today, Indian soldiers brave extreme temperatures, avalanches, and isolation to protect the Siachen frontier. Their resilience is captured in the now-iconic lines:
