Focused Campaign Against Malnutrition
7th Edition of Poshan Pakhwada 2025: Strengthening India’s Nutrition Mission : The Government of India has launched the 7th edition of Poshan Pakhwada from April 8 to April 22, 2025, under its flagship Poshan Abhiyaan. This initiative aims to strengthen nutrition outcomes among India’s most vulnerable sections—children, pregnant women, lactating mothers, and adolescent girls. The campaign encourages community participation and leverages digital tools like the Poshan Tracker to improve awareness, track malnutrition, and empower beneficiaries at the grassroots.
Key Themes Driving the 2025 Edition
This year’s campaign emphasizes four core themes that reflect India’s evolving nutrition priorities. The first is the “First 1000 Days of Life”, highlighting the nutritional needs of mothers and children from conception to two years of age—a period critical for a child’s long-term health. The second theme promotes the Poshan Tracker’s Beneficiary Module, enabling citizens to engage directly in monitoring nutrition delivery. The Community-Based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) is another focus, where localised approaches are used to address undernourishment. Lastly, rising concerns around childhood obesity have led to awareness campaigns on healthy lifestyles for children.
Inter-Ministerial Support for a National Cause
The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development leads the Poshan Pakhwada effort, supported by five key ministries—Health & Family Welfare, Rural Development, Education, Jal Shakti, and Panchayati Raj. Their collaboration ensures the programme is implemented across districts and villages with shared accountability. Events like home visits, nutrition fairs, and interactive educational sessions are being conducted nationwide to bring the message closer to families.
From Awareness to Action: Engaging Communities
One of the campaign’s key goals is to involve communities in managing malnutrition. Field workers are using the Poshan Tracker to identify children at risk, and volunteers are conducting door-to-door campaigns to educate families on breastfeeding, complementary feeding, and basic hygiene practices. With support from local governance bodies, women’s self-help groups are also participating actively in awareness drives, turning nutrition into a household conversation.
The Journey Since 2018
Poshan Abhiyaan was launched on March 8, 2018, in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It aimed to reduce stunting, undernutrition, anaemia, and low birth weight among children and women. Since then, Poshan Pakhwada has become an annual campaign to track progress and renew momentum toward healthier communities. As India pushes to meet its 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), these nutrition efforts play a crucial role.
