Chief Minister’s Vision for the Nilgiris
Tamil Nadu Launches Six Tourism and Tribal Development Projects in Nilgiris : In a major boost to tourism and tribal welfare, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister recently announced six new initiatives for the Nilgiris district. These projects aim to enhance infrastructure, promote tribal culture, and make the Nilgiris a more visitor-friendly destination. By addressing housing, research, mobility, and eco-tourism, the government is setting the tone for sustainable development in one of Tamil Nadu’s most scenic regions.
Housing for Gudalur Families: Kalaignar Nagar
A housing project for 300 families in Gudalur has been proposed under the name Kalaignar Nagar, with a total investment of ₹26.6 crore. The initiative addresses the longstanding housing issues faced by local communities, especially those residing in hilly and vulnerable areas. The project is expected to provide safe, modern homes while also improving sanitation and access to services. It reflects the government’s effort to reduce displacement and ensure inclusive urbanisation.
Tribal Museum and Research Center
One of the most significant announcements was the establishment of a Tribal Museum and Research Center at a cost of ₹10 crore. This centre will preserve the indigenous knowledge systems, art, and history of Adivasi communities in the Nilgiris. It will also serve as a hub for academic research and cultural awareness, promoting tribal inclusion in mainstream society. The museum is expected to become a key attraction, offering educational and tourism value.
Hop-On, Hop-Off Tourism Bus Services
To enhance the visitor experience in the Nilgiris, a “Hop-on, Hop-off” bus service will be launched with 10 buses and a funding of ₹5 crore. This service is designed to make local travel more flexible and affordable, especially for tourists who want to explore multiple attractions like Ooty Lake, Doddabetta, and botanical gardens. Inspired by successful models in cities like London and Singapore, this service is expected to make the Nilgiris more accessible.
Multilevel Parking to Ease Traffic
As tourist numbers grow, so do concerns about traffic congestion in popular towns like Ooty and Coonoor. To tackle this, a multilevel parking facility worth ₹20 crore has been announced. This infrastructure project is aimed at managing the growing inflow of vehicles, especially during tourist season. The parking hub will reduce roadside congestion and improve urban mobility in the hilly terrain.
Eco-Tourism and Tribal Welfare in Nadugani
The government will also invest in eco-tourism facilities in Nadugani, a region known for its biodiversity. The focus is on sustainable travel experiences that protect forest resources while boosting rural livelihoods. Additionally, 23 community halls and 200 houses will be constructed for Adivasi families, supporting the cultural and social needs of marginalised groups.
