A Push for Better Local Governance
Tamil Nadu Creates 50 New Firkas and 25 Revenue Villages to Improve Local Administration : In a strategic move to enhance grassroots administration, the Tamil Nadu government has announced the creation of 50 new firkas and 25 additional revenue villages across several districts. This step comes in response to rising population levels and urban expansion, especially in and around Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, and Kancheepuram. The newly created firkas will be headed by revenue inspectors who will oversee land and administrative affairs in their respective regions.
Focus on Growing Districts
Chennai district alone will get 14 new firkas, reflecting its rapid urban sprawl and growing need for decentralized administrative units. The districts of Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, and Kancheepuram — all witnessing rapid industrial and population growth — will also benefit with 4, 2, and 2 firkas respectively. Likewise, Madurai is set to receive seven additional firkas, while Salem will see the creation of four new ones, reflecting their rapid urban expansion and administrative growth.
Smaller Cities Included Too
The government has ensured that smaller but administratively significant towns are not left out. Districts like Thoothukudi, Tiruvannamalai, Erode, Tirupattur, Dindigul, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Tiruppur, and Villupuram will each receive one additional firka, supporting the growing demand for efficient revenue administration and public service delivery.
Creation of New Revenue Villages
Along with firka restructuring, 25 new revenue villages will be established in key districts such as Chengalpattu, Tiruchi, and Madurai. Revenue villages are the basic units in land record maintenance and rural development programs. By adding new villages, the state aims to ensure that public services and land-related governance become more accessible, especially in rural and semi-urban belts.
