The honour was formally presented at the Government House in Bridgetown, where Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, received the award on behalf of the Prime Minister. This award symbolizes the growing strategic partnership between India and Barbados, a relationship that dates back to 1966, the year Barbados achieved independence. One of the most impactful gestures was India’s Vaccine Maitri initiative during the pandemic, through which critical medical supplies and vaccines were sent to Barbados. The announcement of this honour was made during the India-CARICOM Leaders’ Summit in Georgetown, Guyana, on November 20, 2024, where PM Mottley praised India’s timely assistance and solidarity.

Held on March 7, 2025, the conferral ceremony was more than a diplomatic formality—it was a testament to shared values and mutual respect between two sovereign nations. Minister Margherita conveyed PM Modi’s deep appreciation and reiterated India’s focus on South-South collaboration and inclusive growth. Barbados Foreign Minister Kerrie Symmonds lauded India’s support during the pandemic, noting its critical role in helping the island withstand both health-related and economic challenges.
