A Historic Inauguration on Ram Navami
New Pamban Bridge: India’s First Vertical-Lift Sea Bridge Inaugurated in Tamil Nadu: On April 6, 2025, aligning with the occasion of Ram Navami, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a major infrastructural milestone — the New Pamban Bridge in Tamil Nadu.. Replacing the iconic 100-year-old structure, this first-ever vertical-lift sea bridge in India now links Rameswaram Island with Mandapam on the mainland. The timing of the inauguration, shortly after PM Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka and his aerial darshan of Ram Setu, added spiritual symbolism to this engineering feat.
Engineering Marvel with Modern Tech
The New Pamban Bridge spans 2.07 kilometers and features a vertical-lift design, constructed at a cost exceeding ₹700 crore. Executed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), a Navratna PSU, it features a 72.5-metre lift span that rises 17 metres vertically, allowing ships to pass beneath. Designed for two tracks, it currently operates with one and supports speeds of up to 80 km/h. Advanced construction methods were used, including stainless steel reinforcements, polysiloxane coatings to resist salt corrosion, and fully welded joints for long-term strength. The projected lifespan is 100 years, making it a symbol of sustainability and resilience.
A Symbol of Global-Standard Infrastructure
India’s New Pamban Bridge is now placed among the league of iconic international bridges such as the Golden Gate Bridge (USA) and Tower Bridge (UK). Beyond transport, the structure represents national pride and India’s technological self-reliance in executing complex maritime projects. The design also emphasizes low maintenance, crucial for a structure battling oceanic forces year-round.
Spiritual Connections and Development Push
Prime Minister Modi’s visit carried a spiritual significance as well. Following his puja at the Ramanathaswamy Temple, he shared images of Ram Setu (Adam’s Bridge), describing it as a “divine coincidence” that aligned with the Surya Tilak ceremony held in Ayodhya on the same day. Ram Setu is a chain of shoals between Rameswaram (India) and Mannar (Sri Lanka), with high mythological and geographical significance. Besides the bridge inauguration, PM Modi launched ₹8,300 crore worth of rail and road projects, flagged off the Rameswaram–Tambaram train, and commissioned a new Coast Guard ship that passed under the bridge — a real-time showcase of its vertical-lift functionality.
