Remarkable Discoveries in Pudukottai
Ancient Weaving Tool and Gold Unearthed in Tamil Nadu’s Porpanaikottai Excavation: The ongoing archaeological excavations at Porpanaikottai in Tamil Nadu’s Pudukottai district have unveiled a rare glimpse into the craftsmanship of ancient Tamil civilization. On Tuesday, archaeologists unearthed a bone point, believed to be a weaving tool, along with a piece of gold. The tool, measured at 7.4 cm long and 1 cm in diameter, was found at a depth of nearly 2 meters (192–196 cm).
This tool is thought to have been used in spinning or separating strands of thread, indicating a refined understanding of textiles in ancient Tamil society. Such artefacts suggest the presence of an advanced community with both skilled artisans and access to valuable materials.
Minister Highlights Tamil Literary Connection
Tamil Nadu Finance and Environment Minister Thangam Thennarasu shared the discovery on social media, quoting from the ancient Tamil epic Silappathikaram, believed to be composed between the 5th and 6th centuries AD. The verse he cited speaks of clothes made from silk, hair, and cotton, aligning with the archaeological evidence of early textile practices.
His post underlined the cultural depth and prosperity of the people in Porpanaikottai, stating that these findings bring pride to Tamil history. The discovery of gold further points to economic richness, implying that this area may have once been a flourishing settlement.
Links to Broader Excavation Efforts
This is not an isolated discovery. In November 2024, during the third phase of excavation in Vembakkottai village (Virudhunagar district), researchers uncovered 6000-year-old stone tools from the New Stone Age. These were used for jewellery making and hunting, adding further depth to our understanding of prehistoric Tamil Nadu.
According to excavation director Ponnusamy, more than 2,800 artefacts have been unearthed so far, including gold and copper coins, terracotta figurines, glass beads, and ancient gaming pieces. These relics reflect the daily life, trade, and cultural richness of ancient settlements.
Continuing the Quest for Tamil History
Excavations began on June 18, 2024, and are still in progress. Prior phases were conducted at the Vijayakarisalkulam site, with findings displayed in exhibitions to inform the public. Each discovery helps fill the historical gaps about Tamil Nadu’s early societies and their global connections in craftsmanship, trade, and culture.
Tamil Nadu remains committed to preserving and showcasing its rich past, turning archaeological exploration into a powerful tool for education and heritage awareness.
