Revival of U-Special Bus Service
U-Special Electric Buses Revive Delhi University Transit: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagged off a fleet of modern U-Special buses to improve student connectivity with Delhi University campuses. The service, once an essential part of university life, had been discontinued for years. Its revival under the BJP-led Delhi government marks a return of dedicated student transport.
The initiative is designed to provide students with affordable, safe, and direct transport routes, reducing dependence on costly alternatives and supporting academic engagement.
Static GK fact: Delhi University was established in 1922 and is among the largest universities in India with more than 90 colleges affiliated to it.
Features of the New Fleet
The Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Singh highlighted the upgraded features of the U-Special service. The buses are electric and air-conditioned, equipped with CCTV cameras and panic buttons for safety. They align with Delhi’s broader push for green mobility, aiming to reduce emissions and improve urban air quality.
The introduction of this eco-friendly fleet ties in with India’s wider commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2070.
Static GK fact: The first electric bus service in India was introduced in Bangalore in 2014 by BMTC.
Student Safety and Affordability
The service aims not just at comfort but also at safety. CCTV monitoring and emergency mechanisms assure parents and students of secure travel. The buses also offer a cheaper alternative to the rising cost of metro travel.
With the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) increasing fares on 25 August 2025, students face additional financial stress. Fares were raised by Rs 1–4 depending on distance, and up to Rs 5 on the Airport Express Line.
Government Assurance on Metro Concessions
During the launch, CM Rekha Gupta acknowledged student concerns regarding metro fare hikes. She assured that the government is considering metro concession passes for students, which could significantly ease the financial burden. This shows intent to create an integrated transport ecosystem for the youth.
Static GK Tip: The Delhi Metro, operational since 2002, is India’s first modern rapid transit system and now spans more than 390 km.
Impact on Delhi’s Transport Ecosystem
The reintroduction of U-Special buses is expected to reduce road congestion, lower pollution levels, and revive the cultural vibrancy of student life around Delhi University. It also sets a precedent for other states to replicate student-friendly, sustainable transport solutions.
