First Test Flight Announcement
ISRO Gaganyaan Test Flight Scheduled for December 2025: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) confirmed that the first Gaganyaan test flight will be conducted in December 2025. Chairman V Narayanan announced that nearly 80% of critical tests are complete, marking a significant milestone in India’s human spaceflight program.
Progress of Mission Tests
The Gaganyaan mission involves 9,000 technical tests in total. Out of these, 7,700 have already been completed, while the remaining 2,300 are scheduled for completion by March 2026. The first unmanned test flight will validate systems such as the crew escape mechanism, orbital module, and launch vehicle dynamics.
Static GK fact: The Gaganyaan project was approved by the Government of India in 2018 with a budget of ₹10,000 crore.
Objectives of Gaganyaan
The mission aims to send three Indian astronauts into low earth orbit (LEO) for a duration of up to seven days. The crew will be launched aboard the human-rated GSLV Mk III (LVM-3). This mission will establish India’s indigenous human spaceflight capability, placing it among the select group of nations with this expertise.
Static GK Tip: So far, only the USA, Russia, and China have successfully conducted human spaceflight missions.
ISRO Achievements in 2025
Chairman Narayanan highlighted that ISRO achieved 196 milestones in 2025, showcasing its expanding global role.
Key achievements include:
- Participation in GLEX-2025, displaying India’s space technologies to the global community.
- Development of a high-thrust electric propulsion system, crucial for long-duration interplanetary missions.
- Launching a 6,500-kg US communication satellite from an Indian launchpad, strengthening commercial ties.
- Sharing 13 terabits of solar data from Aditya-L1 with the scientific community for space weather research.
International Collaborations
India’s cooperation in space is also growing. ISRO contributed support to the Axiom-4 mission, reflecting its readiness to work with leading global players in the human spaceflight domain. Such collaborations enhance India’s credibility as a reliable space partner.
Static GK fact: The first Indian in space was Rakesh Sharma, who flew aboard the Soviet Soyuz T-11 mission in 1984.
