IMEC Future in Question

Corridor Overview

IMEC Future in Question: The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) was launched in 2023 to improve trade and connectivity between India, the Gulf, and Europe. It promises a 40% reduction in shipping time compared to conventional sea routes.

Static GK fact: India’s G20 presidency in 2023 marked its third time chairing the group, following 2011 and 2022.

IMEC comprises two major segments: the India-Gulf corridor and the Gulf-Europe corridor. Goods are shipped from India to the UAE, then transported via high-speed rail through Saudi Arabia and Jordan to Israel’s Haifa port, before continuing by sea to Europe.

Static GK TIP: India’s bilateral trade with the European Union was over $137 billion in 2023–24.

Strategic Importance

The corridor reflected a rare moment of Middle East diplomacy, capitalizing on strengthened ties between Arab states and Israel. It seeks to expedite trade, cut costs, reduce carbon emissions via integrated infrastructure, and foster clean energy exports.

Static GK fact: The EU is India’s largest trading partner, underpinning over 45% of India’s foreign trade.

Emerging Challenges

IMEC’s momentum has been undermined by the ongoing Israel–Gaza conflict, which has fractured regional stability. Deteriorating Jordan–Israel ties and stalled Saudi normalization with Israel over the Palestinian issue have disrupted planning. Insurance premiums and logistical risks have surged due to growing hostilities across Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Iraq, and tensions with Iran. These issues have evolved from operational hurdles to existential obstacles.

Current Status

Despite the disruptions, the corridor’s eastern leg involving India, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia remains viable. Strong bilateral trade ties and initiatives like UPI-based digital payment integration bolster connectivity.

Static GK fact: India’s UPI (Unified Payments Interface) processed over 14 billion transactions in December 2024, enhancing digital trade links.

However, rivalry between the UAE and Saudi Arabia for regional leadership introduces further complexity. Full implementation of IMEC hinges on renewed geopolitical stability and progress on the Palestinian question. Until then, IMEC remains a strategic concept awaiting favourable conditions.
