Telecom transformation vision
India’s Next Telecom Leap with NTP 2025: The Draft National Telecom Policy 2025 (NTP-2025) sets an ambitious roadmap to transform India into a digitally empowered economy. It aims to provide universal and meaningful connectivity, secure networks, and promote digital inclusion.
The policy continues the progress made under the National Digital Communications Policy 2018 and prepares India to lead in next-generation technologies.
Strategic telecom missions
NTP-2025 outlines six strategic missions focused on innovation, sustainability, and inclusiveness.
The first is Universal and Meaningful Connectivity, aiming to expand telecom infrastructure, improve service quality, and enable equal digital access.
Innovation is the second mission, encouraging research, startups, and stronger collaboration among industry, academia, and government.
The Domestic Manufacturing mission pushes for a design-led and investment-driven ecosystem that supports India’s vision of becoming “Bharat – A Telecom Product Nation”.
Secure, sustainable digital future
The mission of Secure and Trusted Telecom Network focuses on strengthening cybersecurity, building resilience, and adopting quantum-resistant cryptography.
Ease of Living and Doing Business will be improved by simplifying telecom processes and making services more accessible.
The Sustainable Telecom mission promotes green technologies, renewable energy use, and aims to reduce the carbon footprint by 30%.
Static GK fact: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), under the Ministry of Communications, is the central authority managing India’s telecom policies and frameworks.
Economic growth and job creation
NTP-2025 aims to double the telecom sector’s contribution to India’s GDP, positioning telecom as a major pillar of the economy.
The policy targets an infrastructure investment of ₹1 lakh crore annually and plans to create 1 million new jobs while upskilling/reskilling another 1 million workers.
Emerging technologies like 5G, 6G, AI, IoT, Blockchain, and Satellite Communications will be key drivers of this transformation.
Static GK Tip: India’s first 5G services were launched in October 2022, making it one of the earliest adopters among developing nations.
Global leadership ambition
Through NTP-2025, India aims to become the “Nation of Choice” for telecom technology, asserting global leadership in innovation and manufacturing.
The draft policy encourages creating an ecosystem where domestic technologies are promoted, secure infrastructure is ensured, and sustainability is mainstreamed into the digital growth path.
