New work destination in the Himalayas
India Launches First Digital Nomad Village in Sikkim: India has inaugurated its first Digital Nomad Village in Yakten, located in Sikkim’s Pakyong district. The initiative aims to support remote workers with reliable infrastructure in a serene mountain environment. It also brings economic opportunities for local families through homestay tourism equipped with high-speed internet.
Nomad Sikkim initiative
The project, named ‘Nomad Sikkim’, is a collaboration between the Pakyong district administration and the NGO Sarvahitey. It targets the problem of seasonal income loss faced by homestay owners during lean tourist months, especially between April and October. The village is now a functional space for digital professionals looking to work remotely from the hills.
Infrastructure built for remote work
Yakten has been upgraded with dual internet lines, village-wide Wi-Fi, and power backup systems to ensure uninterrupted productivity. These upgrades are critical for digital nomads who require consistent connectivity.
Static GK fact: The Jal Jeevan Mission, launched in 2019, is a central government scheme aimed at providing piped water to all rural households in India. It is also active in improving Yakten’s water supply.
Rich cultural experience in homestays
Unlike commercial hotels, Yakten’s homestays offer cultural immersion. Guests stay with local families, enjoy home-cooked Sikkimese food, and engage with traditional folk dance, music, and village life. These experiences make it an attractive destination for professionals seeking work-life balance in a rural setting.
Road and air connectivity
Yakten is accessible by road and is located near the Pakyong Airport, enhancing its appeal to domestic and international remote workers. This makes travel and logistics easy for long-term visitors.
Static GK Tip: Pakyong Airport, inaugurated in 2018, is Sikkim’s first greenfield airport and is among the five highest airports in India by elevation.
Impact on local economy
By extending the tourism model beyond seasonal limits, the initiative provides steady income to villagers. It also sets a precedent for digitally inclusive rural development. Experts suggest this model could be replicated in other parts of India, helping bridge the urban-rural economic divide.
Balanced lifestyle with natural beauty
The surrounding hills offer digital workers a chance to unwind. Attractions like the 7-km trail to Jhandi Dara View Point, with views of Mt. Kanchenjunga, enhance the lifestyle experience. Community gardens and village trails allow for relaxation and connection with nature.
