A Landmark Year for Organ Donation
Tamil Nadu Leads the Nation in Deceased Organ Donations in 2024 : In 2024, Tamil Nadu recorded 268 deceased organ donors, the highest in India, marking a historic milestone in the country’s transplant movement. This achievement was made possible through the coordinated efforts of TRANSTAN (Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu), medical institutions, and families who made the decision to give life through donation.
Out of the total, 146 donors (54.48%) came from government hospitals and 122 from private hospitals, making it a truly inclusive healthcare effort. Compared to 156 donors in 2022 and 178 in 2023, this sharp rise in 2024 reflects Tamil Nadu’s sustained public health commitment and efficient transplant ecosystem.
What Makes Tamil Nadu a National Leader?
Tamil Nadu has long been a pioneer in cadaver organ transplantation, having launched India’s first organised deceased donation programme. The factors contributing to this leadership include:
- TRANSTAN, which oversees matching, logistics, and database management.
- Green Corridors for rapid organ transport between hospitals.
- Public awareness campaigns led by schools, NGOs, and medical institutions.
- Trained grief counsellors and hospital coordinators ensuring family consent and ethical practices.
Hospitals like RGGGH, Stanley Medical College, and Madurai GH have been instrumental, proving that even government hospitals can lead in complex, high-value medical interventions.
