MSMEs emerge as backbone of state economy
Tamil Nadu 2025 Economic Review Shows Strong Industrial and MSME Growth: In the latest economic data for 2025, Tamil Nadu’s MSME sector has proven to be one of the strongest contributors to the state’s development. The DMK-led government has significantly stepped up funding for this sector, with financial support touching ₹6,626 crore—a notable rise compared to the amount sanctioned over the previous decade under the AIADMK rule.
For the current year alone, ₹1,918.22 crore has been allocated, pointing to the priority given to this segment. The state now has over 35 lakh registered MSMEs, placing it in third position nationally, following Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.
Job creation and trade performance
These small and medium enterprises have played a massive role in creating jobs. An estimated 2.47 crore people are now employed in this sector, highlighting its importance not just to the economy but also to social stability.
On the export side, Tamil Nadu has performed impressively. With foreign shipments valued at over 30 billion US dollars, it continues to hold the third rank among Indian states. This underlines the consistent demand for Tamil Nadu’s industrial products in global markets.
Manufacturing sector powers ahead
The state continues to be one of India’s strongest industrial hubs, contributing nearly 12% of the nation’s manufacturing output. It leads the country in the production of motor vehicles, ready-made garments, and leather goods. Additionally, it ranks second in producing textile machinery and electronics, which indicates a diverse and robust industrial base.
New industrial parks and support infrastructure
To boost industrial expansion, the state government has developed 14 new industrial parks across various districts. These facilities are designed to offer modern infrastructure and encourage both large industries and MSMEs to set up operations in less saturated regions.
The parks are expected to decentralise industrial development and reduce pressure on traditional hubs like Chennai, while offering advanced amenities to investors and startups.
Women’s role in economic development
Tamil Nadu has also made considerable progress in empowering women through employment and entrepreneurship. Of the total number of women workers in India, a significant portion—over 40%—comes from Tamil Nadu. Moreover, nearly one-third of all entrepreneurs in the state are women, pointing to a supportive business environment.
This success has been driven by targeted initiatives such as startup incentives, credit support schemes, and women-led self-help groups. These programs have opened new opportunities for women to engage in business and industry across the state.
