A small discovery with big importance
New Gecko Species Found in Coonoor Hills: A brand new species of gecko, Dravidogecko coonoor, has been discovered in Coonoor, located in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu. The find was made by a team of researchers led by A. Abinesh and was recently published in the journal Bionomina. This discovery adds a new entry to the rich biodiversity of the Western Ghats, a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the eight “hottest hotspots” of biological diversity in the world.
How the discovery happened?
Earlier, this small reptile was mistakenly grouped under the species Hemidactylus anamallensis. However, through detailed field surveys and deeper examination, the scientists identified distinct differences and confirmed that this was indeed a new species. In the process, they also identified eight more species of Dravidogecko, increasing the known count to nine in total.
Where it lives
The Dravidogecko coonoor has adapted to survive in both urban and natural environments. It can be seen clinging to the walls of buildings, resting on tree trunks, and hiding in bushy plantations. Its preferred ecosystem is the montane forest zone, which includes plantation lands and partially disturbed habitats — a clear sign of how closely its existence is tied to the region’s unique terrain.
This gecko is endemic to the higher elevations of the Western Ghats, meaning it is found nowhere else in the world. Such geographic restriction makes the species ecologically significant and extremely sensitive to environmental disruptions.
Why this matters for conservation?
While the discovery is exciting, it also raises serious concerns. The Dravidogecko coonoor is not located inside any protected wildlife sanctuary or reserve. This means it is highly exposed to habitat fragmentation, human encroachment, and deforestation.
Researchers have noted that this species could be potentially threatened. With climate change also adding unpredictable stress to its delicate environment, urgent conservation efforts are needed to prevent its decline.
What this tells us?
This new discovery reminds us of the hidden biodiversity still present in Indian landscapes. It also shows how scientific research continues to play a key role in identifying species that are under the radar. Understanding the needs and behaviors of such species can help shape better policies for habitat protection and long-term ecological balance.
