Honey production has grown steadily in India
India sees 60% rise in honey production over a decade: In the past decade, India has seen a remarkable growth in its honey production. The Prime Minister recently highlighted that the country has witnessed a 60% increase in output compared to previous years. This is a major step forward in rural livelihoods, agri-business, and export growth.
Back in 2013–14, India’s average annual production was around 70,000 to 75,000 metric tonnes. Fast forward to 2024–25, the number has climbed to about 1.25 lakh metric tonnes. This growth not only benefits beekeepers and farmers but also strengthens the rural economy and supports sustainable agriculture.
India is among top global honey producers
India now ranks as the 7th largest honey producer in the world. China continues to dominate both production and exports on a global scale, but India is closing the gap steadily with increased support for beekeeping and agro-forestry initiatives.
This progress is partly due to various government-backed schemes promoting apiculture, improved quality standards, and better access to international markets.
States leading in honey output
In 2022–23, several Indian states made notable contributions to total honey production. Uttar Pradesh topped the list, contributing about 17%, followed closely by West Bengal with 16%.
Other prominent producers include:
- Punjab
- Bihar
- Rajasthan
These regions have ideal conditions for beekeeping, including crop diversity and access to forest flora.
More than half of the honey is exported
Over 50% of India’s honey production is exported. This is significant considering that quality standards and purity play a major role in global trade. In 2023–24, Indian honey reached major international markets such as:
- United States of America (USA)
- United Arab Emirates (UAE)
- Saudi Arabia
- Qatar
- Libya
This wide export reach shows India’s growing reputation for natural and unadulterated honey.
Honey as a source of income and health
Beekeeping provides a sustainable income for thousands of rural families. It complements farming by increasing crop pollination and improving yields. Apart from being a livelihood, honey also plays a role in nutrition, wellness, and traditional medicine.
India’s rising demand for organic and natural products has further boosted domestic consumption, especially in health-conscious urban areas.
