Pre-Monsoon Tiger Survey in Focus
Pre-Monsoon Wildlife Survey Begins at Anamalai Tiger Reserve: The Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) in Tamil Nadu has begun its pre-monsoon wildlife census, a vital initiative to assess the status of tigers, co-predators, prey populations, and forest health. Conducted ahead of the rainy season, this survey provides crucial ecological insights needed for conservation planning and habitat management.
About Anamalai Tiger Reserve
Established in 2007, ATR is located in the Anamalai Hills of the Western Ghats and is also known as the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park. It spans a diverse range of ecosystems and functions as a key corridor for endangered species in southern India.
Geographical and Cultural Landscape
ATR shares its borders with major protected areas including Parambikulam Tiger Reserve (PTR), Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, and Eravikulam National Park, as well as Kerala’s Nenmara, Vazhachal, and Marayur forests. Indigenous tribes such as the Kadars, Muduvars, Malasars, and Eravalars inhabit the region, playing a significant role in sustainable forest conservation.
Forest Types and Wildlife Richness
The reserve boasts a variety of habitats—from evergreen and deciduous forests to montane grasslands and shola ecosystems. It supports rich biodiversity, including tigers, elephants, leopards, sambars, jackals, and deer, along with many birds and reptiles, reflecting its high ecological value.
Global and Conservation Significance
Parts of ATR, such as Kariyan Shola, Grass Hills, and Manjampatti Valley, have been recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These areas are celebrated for their unique biodiversity and forest ecosystems. The ongoing survey not only aligns with national wildlife policies but also supports India’s global conservation commitments.
